Grossular was named in 1811 by Abraham Gottlob Werner, who named the mineral after the Latin word for gooseberry (ribes grossularia) because of its often green colour. Grossulars, like many other garnets, are valued and valuable gemstones, which, depending on their quality, are either cut in various facets or processed into cabochons. The tsavorite with its beautiful emerald green colour belongs to the grossular family, among others.
